Once or twice a day, do each of the following for 30 minutes.
Remember them with the fingers on your hand.
Walking (jog, run, bike, dance, exercise, sports, etc) – for the body
Outdoors (out of doors, in nature, in the sun) – for the spirit
Listening (play music, to nature, in school, read) – for mind and spirit
Meditating (quiet, reflect, write, inner voice, insight, wisdom) – for the mind
Giving (donate, time, labor, help, share, cook, clean, compassion) – for the spirit
This doesn’t need to take 5 extra hours everyday. School teachers complete three to five of them as part of their work. Four could be accomplished all at once by taking a walk, outside, with music, and picking up some pieces of trash.
Step 1: Determine which ones you are doing already, as part of your job or daily routine. Pat yourself on the back. If you do all five, give yourself a hand.
Step 2: Decide which activities you want to add to your routine. Add them gradually, so it stays enjoyable. If it helps, do them with other people.
Step 3: Think positively about what you were able to accomplish (i.e. Appreciate being able to do 10 minutes of walking outside). Thinking negatively about what you didn’t accomplish decreases happiness and energy.
Each day, you can enjoy the gradual increase in happiness that One Hour Living helps you find by being more present and aware. Keep in mind that it is flexible, so adjust your prescription. Hopefully, practicing One Hour Living will help you feel happier and more alive. Please give it a try and leave a comment.
“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.” …. Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth.
At the MedHelp.org website is a slideshow titled “16 Ways to Make your Energy Soar”, which help increase your daily energy and make you feel more alive and happy (soar). Happiness is not achieved by the conscious pursuit of happiness; it is generally the by-product of other activities.
– Aldous Huxley

glad you think it valuable enough to share 😉
You must understand the whole of life, not just one little part of it. That is why you must read, that is why you must look at the skies, that is why you must sing and dance, and write poems, and suffer, and understand, for all that is life. (Jiddu Krishnamurti)
It is worth noting that: read, look at the skies, dance, write… are all part of the One Hour Living prescription.
RE: One Hour Living, Giving
“It is important that when pursing our own self-interest we should be “wise selfish” and not “foolish selfish”. Being foolish selfish means pursuing our own interests in a narrow, shortsighted way. Being wise selfish means taking a broader view and recognizing that our own long-term individual interest lies in the welfare of everyone. Being wise selfish means being compassionate.”
